Wondering if your
outdoor spaces are in need of a refresh? These are the tell-tale signs.

Algae

Green algae, scientifically known as Chlorophyta, is a plant-like organism that thrives in damp, shaded conditions, making patios and decking ideal surfaces for growth. It often appears as a green and brown film. If left untreated, it can quickly spread.

As it builds up, it creates a slippery layer that poses a safety risk - an important consideration if you use your property as a holiday rental.

In addition, algae can cause stubborn staining on wood and stone, and these marks can easily be tracked indoors on shoes, transferring onto carpets and flooring.

Lichens

You might never have heard of them, but you are bound to have seen them before.

Lichens are the organisms created when an algae and a fungus unite. They often appear as crusty patches, leafy growths, or small branching forms, in colours like grey, green, yellow, or orange.

Although they do not directly damage materials, lichens can detract from brickwork and woodwork by holding moisture against the surface, which may lead to gradual weathering in bricks and increased dampness or rot in wood.

Moss

Moss is a small, non-vascular plant belonging to the division Bryophyta, with common species such as Bryum capillare

Moss can create problems on outdoor surfaces such as driveways, patios and decking as it it retains moisture and forms a slippery layer that increases the risk of trips and falls, especially in wet conditions.

Over time, it can also contribute to the deterioration of materials by trapping water—encouraging rot in wood and weakening surfaces like tarmac through persistent dampness and surface breakdown.
